The Coming Wave: A Thought Provoking Read for Leader and Entrepreneur.
I love to read.
However, too frequently reading books has become competitive, with entrepreneurs citing vast reading lists. In the spirit of actionable advice built on experience, I'm choosing 'slow reading' - taking time to reflect and apply new insights from the concepts and theories proposed.
This weekend I read a book that resonated. It was applicable to health, longevity, wellbeing and sustainability.
As we face unprecedented technological transformation, Mustafa Suleyman’s “The Coming Wave” is both a beacon of hope and a call for vigilance and ethical leadership. It comes at a time when I have been deeply considering health and wellbeing data, the ability to support food chains, and the impact of AI.
Suleyman proposes that we’re hurtling toward a convergence of artificial intelligence and synthetic biology. A pivotal moment of innovation where algorithms compose alongside our genetic code. A time when humankind needs to strike a balance between the possible, versus the acceptable.
Like any powerful force, this wave wields both promise and peril. AI could cure diseases, optimise food production, and revolutionise transportation, all of which are sectors and ways of life that desperately need intervention. Yet, it also harbours the potential for malevolence – cyber warfare, rogue algorithms, and unintended consequences.
It is a moment in time when strong, ethical leadership and decision-making have never been more important. It’s a tightrope walk between innovation and safeguarding humanity.
Suleyman’s book isn’t a dystopian prophecy; it’s a roadmap that I find compelling, encouraging us to be explorers, not passengers. It is our time to learn and engage. To be courageous, brave, and with the confidence to speak up. To see how we can utilise future technologies to benefit the nation's health, wealth, and sustainability.
